Fuel Cell Tutorial

Professor Dr. Detlef Stolten

Monday, 30 June 2008, from 10:00 to 17:00

Tutorial Language: English

The Tutorial will provide basic understanding of technical, chemical and physical principles that make fuel cells work simply, reliably and affordably. Therefore, fuel cell application requirements and practical examples of current developments will be discussed. Fuel cells will be treated as an interdisciplinary matter involving electrochemistry as well as materials science and engineering. This year the focus will be on SOFC, yet PEFC, DMFC and MCFC are presented as well.

The Tutorial addresses newcomers as well as those who have been working in the area of fuel cells for some time. Participants will gain a basic understanding of fuel cell technology or add expert know-how and practical experience to already existing understanding and knowledge. Typical management is also addressed as research and development trends will be discussed. The Tutorial will be held in English making it a useful introduction for newcomers to the global world of fuel cells.

The Tutorial will provide an excellent kick-start into the Lucerne FUEL CELL FORUM 2008, a week of exposure to the latest developments in fuel cells. During the Tutorial you will receive answers to questions before you have to ask them or you may ask questions you may not dare to voice in front of a general audience. Ample opportunity is provided for discussions.

Each participant will receive a complete documentation of the Tutorial lecture with many useful illustrations, tables and curves. This document reflects the 18 years of experience of Prof. Dr. Detlef Stolten in the area of fuel cells and fuel cell applications.

The Tutorial lecture will cover the following topics:
Fuel cell reactions, thermodynamics, kinetics, triple-phase boundary, efficiency, different types of electrolytes, cell and stack structures, fuel and air supply, internal and external fuel reforming, fuels for fuel cells, as well as typical applications fuel cell systems and market introduction for the most popular types of fuel cells: SOFC, MCFC, PEFC and DMFC.

Tutorial-only participants are welcome. Please use the Registration Form.

Schedule:
10:00 Registration, welcome refreshments
10:30 Session 1
12:00 Business lunch
13:00 Session 2
14:30 Coffee break
15:00 Session 3
17:00 End of Tutorial

The Tutor: Prof. Dr. Detlef Stolten

Prof. Dr. Detlef Stolten Detlef Stolten received his doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) from the University of Technology at Clausthal/Germany. He served many years as a Research Scientist in the laboratories of Robert Bosch and Daimler Benz/Dornier and later became Marketing Manager at Dornier Satellitentechnik GmbH.

In 1998 he accepted the position of Director of the Institute of Materials and Process Technology at the Research Center Jülich. Two years later he became Professor for Fuel Cell Technology at the University of Technology (RWTH) at Aachen. His research activities are focused on energy process engineering of SOFC and PEFC systems, i.e. electrochemistry, stack technology, process and systems engineering as well as systems analysis.

Dr. Stolten devotes much of his time to foster the cooperation between research and industry. He is head of the Fuel Cell Network of the German State of North-Rhine-Westphalia and Member of the Board of the German Research Association of Electrochemistry (AGEF). He also represents Germany in the Executive Committee of the IEA Annex Advanced Fuel Cells.

Tutorial Fee
The fee for the optional Fuel Cell Tutorial by Professor Dr. Detlef Stolten covers the lectures with complete documentation of the six hour lecture program and refreshments. The Tutorial Fee is 500 CHF (7.6% tax is included).

You may register for the Tutorial without participating in the entire conference. Please indicate your choice on the Registration Form.
